What are the restrictions on failover?

Features that cannot be used simultaneously
  • Access Restrictions on ActiveDirectory/NT Domain
  • Power on/off with Sleep Timer
  • Replication
  • MySQL
  • Port Trunking
  • Volume Encryption *1
  • LVM *1
  • Media Cartridge *1
Features that cannot be copied if failover is working
  • Web server (including php)
  • MySQL server
  • Direct Copy
  • Web Access
  • Print Server
  • UPS
Operations that is not available if failover is configured
  • Initialize configuration
  • Format Disk
  • Reboot TeraStation
  • Change RAID array
  • Change the settings of the backup TeraStation from Settings
  • Shut down TeraStation from Settings
  • Reboot TeraStation from Settings
  • Update firmware

Other Restrictions

  • Use fixed IP address.
  • The IP address of a backup TeraStation cannot be changed.
  • The two TeraStations are required to be placed close to each other if failover is configured. Failover is not intended for Disaster Recovery (Remote Backup).
  • If Replication is configured files or have been configured on multiple files, initialize the Failover configuration first, and then reconfigure it.
If replication has been configured even once, you can not use the Failover function even if replication is configured not to be utilized. (If replication has been configured against single file, it is no problem to configure Failover.)
  • Files are transfered without synchronization. It might take long time to transfer files depending on network environment or operating state of TeraStation.
  • When accessing at the same time, processing speed of system may slow down.
  • It is impossible to keep loading massive amount of files in succession for a long time.
  • The transfer source of failover can not be used as the backup destination of Time Machine feature supported by Mac OS.
If email notification is configured and failover starts running, after failover has finished, navigate to [System] - [Maintenance] - [Email Notification Settings] - [Modify Settings] - [Save] on the main unit.
  • Depending on the certain faults, an error message may be displayed, but the failover function does not have any problem.(TS-2RZH,TS-2RZS series)

Available Protocols

  • With the Replication, only files and folders written by a protocol, such as Windows file sharing (SMB, CIFS)/Apple file sharing (AFP)/NFS/SFTP/FTP/FTPS, are transferred to a replication target.
  • If data is written by AFP from Mac OS X, the system processing speed may slow down. In this case, try SMB to write data.
  • If NFS is set in the Kernel mode, files/folders written by the NFS protocol are not transferred to a replication target.
In order to change the NFS settings from the Kernel mode to the user mode, go to Settings and select [Network] - [NFS] - [NFS Service].

Notes on the maintenance

  • Update firmware or reboot/shut down TeraStation.
Make sure to set both the "Main TeraStation" and the "Backup TeraStation" in the maintenance mode before updating firmware or rebooting/shutting down TeraStation. Log in the main TeraStation's settings, and change it to Maintenance Mode in the Failover section.
  • If you log in the main TeraStation's settings and select [System] - [Failover] - [Maintenance Mode], both the main and backup TeraStations will become "Maintenance Mode".
  • Shut down TeraStation with the power button after changing to "Maintenance Mode".
  • It is no problem to shut down from either the main or the backup TeraStation.
  • After rebooting, make sure to cancel "Maintenance Mode" to use it normally.
  • Even if it is in maintenance mode, the configuration of backup unit can not be changed.
(If you change the configuration, the backup unit will be in the different status from the main unit.)
  • Temporarily stop failover
To temporarily stop failover, select [System] - [Failover] - [Maintenance mode] in the main TeraStation's settings. To resume failover, click [Cancel Maintenance mode].
  • Disable failover
To disable failover, go to [System]-[Failover] in the main TeraStation's settings, then select [Failover Stop] or [Failover Force Stop]. Failover can also be disabled by clicking [Failover Stop] in the backup TeraStation's settings.
